S.O.S. - Save Our SoftTub (Slow Leak in Softtub)

Hello - I was pouring through some posts from a year or two ago and I have the same issue - there seems to be a slow leak in my SoftTub. The rubber around all of the jets has been replaced (got some cool tools online and the actual fittings) but I filled it up again yesterday and there appears to be a slow leak. I am afraid to try the solutions for fixing the leak as I do not want to bugger up the plumbing and I have sent some queries to a few other members as they were answering this question previously. I am not sure exactly what to do so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Help! Slow leak in softub!

My poor old softub has sprung a leak. When I fill it, over the course of a few days it empties down to the same spot just below one of the jets, about a quarter of the way down. It was working fine until I emptied it and changed the water and filter about a month ago. It was a bit cold out, so I'm wondering if I may have cracked something while it was empty. Does anyone have any suggestions? I live in New York City, so it's going to be very difficult and probably expensive to get it repaired. (I would probably have to get someone to come in from outside of the city.) It was secondhand to begin with, although in great condition (barely used) and I am an artist with practically no money. I will be so bummed out if I can't get this fixed! Help! Help!

Should there be a law requiring hot tubs for Northern Californians?

When I tell people I have a hot tub, they sometimes respond, "Really?" I answer back that it's required by law to have a hot tub if you live in Northern California.

Good Idea???

newbie, looking for a guru

I really, really need a hot tub at this house I just bought. But I really, really don't know enough to even ask the right questions. I need advice on where in the yard to put the tub, what sort to get, how big, what needs to be done to prep the space -- concrete pad, gravel, what? -- can I wire it myself or need an electrician. I just know there are more questions I should be asking. Or is there somewhere locally I could/should go to for the answers? Please help?

If my guru lived near Mtn View, CA and could look at the yard, it would be great.

TIA for any help or advice.

People need to stop 'hatin', 'cause they don't like another's ad; I mean, how selfish, disrespect, etc can ya be, I'm so sure. Well, humanity is what it it, so be it. Some people out there are just haters & will bring anybody down with them they can, geez, it's so sad & pathetic, I pity them, so be it!

Jeff Morris of www.jeffreydavidmorris.com; my photo, etc. is on my website, page 1, 2 & 3. I’m 5-11, 150 lb.s, living in Los Angeles, CA. I'm single, straight, live alone/have my own pad, am independent, better at cleaning than cooking. Enjoy life hangin' out and kickin' it with good, close friends. Music is my source of self-power & is my deep, passionate love that keeps me sane day to day; music like Alternative Rock, 80's & 90's Pop Rock, Rave, Trance, House, Hip-Hop/R & B, Jazz, Blues, & alittle Classical. I like friend's with whom are free to just (BE) themselves, exhibiting a sense of independence & freedom to just (BE) yourself. I'm fascinated with (The Faith psychological & personality profile). Moving on, I've been on my own a majority of my life, (16) years in LA, originally from Detroit, MI. At (18), I moved out to LA. I am clean, safe,diseases-free. I desire female close companionship/friendship with whom are playful, slim, sassy, spunky, funny, geeky, (21-35), Caucasian, Hispanic or Asian, slim, medium length hair, any eye color, no body piercing, small tattoos are fine. I enjoy (sci-fi) films. I'm PC/internet savvy & resourceful. I've worked in the entertainment industry doing background scene and (P.A.) work in the past, and am doing freelance casual & general labor work at this time, with higher, further personal ('undisclosed') goal's. All I know is: "Tomorrow is not promised to no one", "Life is too short", "Get busy living or Get busy dying", & "God don't give anyone more than they can handle". Like to go for a walk, feel free to check out:
www.hollywoodknolls.org/hollywood_reservoir.htm I also think the human female can be the utmost of God. That being the case, my Angel, Queen, & Goddess is Flux, I'm so in (awe) of her, especially in her 'Dune' photo set, of www.suicidegirls.com
And note, I'm merely seeking female friendship/companionship, Caucasian, Latina, Asian, (21-35), slim, beautiful, live in LA. So that's it, it's like that, on the real. Just looking to network & meet cool female friend's, that's all. Sweet

Hi!
I recently acquired a hot tub and am looking into alternatives to chlorine/bromine.

I just saw ad for a "naturally-pure mineral water" solution at www.ahhnatural.com

Does anyone have experience with their system?

Any recommendations for other alternatives?

Thanks,

Wow, I just scanned through the only active thread this tribe has had for a long time and it was not all that great - there must be some people out there with other things to bring up and move past whatever that "female needed" thread was about.

I'm really interested in a Boston version of what a group in Oakland have done where there is a non-creepy social group of people that are grew by friends of friends and the background reason to get together was to soak in a hot tub periodically.

Portland Area Hot Tubbers

Hi Everyone!

Things seem to be a bit quiet with this tribe, so I thought that it would be best to post a question or two.

Are there any people out there in the greater Portland, Oregon area that would be willing to share their tube or even host a party? I'm unfortunately tubless right now, and I'm saddened by the news that Inner City Hot Springs has closed down.

I have been to one of the commercial rent-a-tub places in town, but I'm looking for a more social environment.
Marin Tidal Hot Springs: Happening, but Going Fast!

For those who have heard of the Marine County Tidal Hot Springs, but have never been: Yes they are real. I just went this morning and they're in fantastic shape! Unfortunately they will become rarer soon, so if you may want to visit them soon (like the next few days).

The springs are most easily reached by 'goat' trail near Steep Ravine Environmental Campground, located about 1/4 mi. south of Red Rock Beach, which is about 2.5 mi. south of Stinson Beach. Most of the time (i.e. >99%) the springs are covered by the Pacific Ocean, and they only happen during extreme low tides (i.e. when the tides are less than '0' foot mean-tide). These extreme low tides occur only during certain days (normally around New Moon and Full Moon). Summer and Winter have more extreme tides than Fall and Spring, and the Winter Storms often swamp the springs with high waves, no matter how low the tides get. Therefore Summer is the best Soaking Season.

Sadly, the 2007 Summer Soaking Season is almost over, and opportunities are getting rarer.

The good news is that we're in the middle of one of the last extreme-tide 'cycles' of the season. So the next Hot Springs will occur very early tomorrow (Sunday) morning, starting at ~4:15 AM (when the tide falls to '0' feet). The tide will then continue to fall to 0.9 ft. at 5:56 AM, and the springs will keep getting hotter. It will remain hot until the rising tide brings the waves, which will probably occur shortly before 9:00 AM (when the tide rises to almost 1 ft. above '0' mean tide).

The next day (Monday) everything will occur about 50 minutes later. The next day the it wil happen again, but not as much. By the end of the week the 'cycle' will be over. There are a few low tides in August, though they won't be as deep as tomorrow or Monday.

If this interests you feel free t reply and I'll send directions. Realistically, it's probably not a good idea for you to try to hike down the (very steep) trail to the springs in the pre-dawn dark unless you're hiking with someone experienced. Once you've been shown the way, there's no problem. Nevertheless, it's best to follow someone else the first time. Also: Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes and/or socks (there's poison oak on the path -- no need to spoil you experience by getting stung :-)

We'll be going tomorrow (Sunday) morning, so if any of you want to ride with us or caravan in your own vehicle, just email and we can make arrangements.

Hope you find this info useful.

Happy Soaking!

pressure washing my filter!

Hi,

About a month or two ago, I was having trouble with cloudy water in my tub,
even though the bromine and PH was at the right levels... So, I bought
a pressure washer. I had been wanting one anyway, my house needs to be
pressure washed.
The difference is amazing! After spraying off the filter with the pressure washer,
the tub cleared up to crystal clear within a day! Apparently, on my country
property, my water system doesn't have enough pressure to do the job.
(my water pump is set to 40-60psi - the pressure washer goes up to 1500psi!)

Just thought I'd put that out there in case anyone is having a similar problem.
The pressure washer was under $100, and now I'm like a kid, I just want to spray everything! ;-)
(my walkway has never looked so clean!)

Peace,
Chris

Our tub is an older one, at least 12 years old, and we have been having a very difficult time getting it to stay hot. We are planning to try to insulate it and wondered if anyone would recommend a specific type of insulation. Has anyone had any luck with adding insulation? Thanks so much for any/all advice

Hi!

I have a clear water tub, its Heater is set to not go above 104. I know that in the past they could set the thermometer to go higher, does anyone know how this was done? I've not opened the box to study the board yet, but that is next on my list of things to do.

Cheers,

This is actually a brand, seems easily portable and doesn't require permanent connections - can be run off 110 and filled with a hose. Then later rolled into the basement or wherever for storage.
http://www.softubdirect.com/softub.php

I've been looking at used ones (new ones are like $2,500) and just curious whether anyone here had tried one - thanks for any feedback.

I really want to use a minimum of chemicals in the hot tub, but I also want it to be sanitary. Does anyone have any comments on a routine such as this? http://www.poolandspa.com/Page9.htm I assume the hot tub joints are in the business of selling accessories. What's a realistic maintenance and cleaning routine?

Pea Gravel Pad or Concrete Pad?

I wanted to let folks here know about this in case they're in the position to be making a choice about whether to use a pea gravel pad or pour a concrete pad. We went with pea gravel because we thought it would allow us more leeway for changing the location of the tub later if we needed to. We are now experiencing a huge problem with ants. An entomologist at UC Berkeley said that they love porous areas like that. The ants are now nesting underneath the hot tub and there are TONS of them. They're going to be very hard to eradicate. So...that's one disadvantage of a gravel pad.

New tribe, Alaskan Naturists

I've started a tribe for Alaskan Naturists. I've been involved with organized naturism / nudism since the mid-1990s. I was a member of a great club in central California called the Natural Manner Club, which I was able to participate in when I visited California. The Natural Manner Club held one or two events a month, almost always at the home of a member. Folks who had swimming pools (with high fences in their back yards) hosted swimming parties, people with large-screen televisions hosted super bowl / world cup events, and various holidays became general clothing-mostly-optional theme parties (St. Valentine's Day, St. Patty's Day, Halloween, Christmas, etc.). Some people organized day hikes in secluded areas of federal land (there are no federal laws against nudity, as long as it's not "lewd"). One club member was a guide at a cave and once a year he led a clothing-optional (shoes recommended) hike of the caverns.

Living in Anchorage, I'd enjoy finding others who would like to socialize in a clothing-free atmosphere, at least now and then. Looking forward to meeting more like-minded friends. Come join me if you'd like to learn more.
I’m letting all of the tribes know about a regional event coming up soon – Rebirth. Burning Man, but rather than radical desert survival – radical tropical rain forest survival. Details of the event can be found here:

http://www.kapilina.org/bigisland/rebirth2006.html

Hawaii… Fire spinning capital of the world… Big Island… Hot tub ponds heated by thermal vents… Black Sand Beaches… LAVA… REAL LAVA! And a Burning Man regional event.

I’ve tried to figure out how to reduce costs as much as possible for everyone coming over from the mainland (if you can think of anyother suggestions please post):

NYC Hot Tubs?

Okay, so my girlfriend and I moved to NYC from LA a few years ago (2 for me, 1 for her) and we have yet to find any friends with hot tubs. What's the deal? There have to be SOME out there!

I mean, jeez, in LA you couldn't throw a rubber duckie without it landing in a hot tub. Why such a lack of warm suds and jets in the big apple?

If any of you happen to have tubs in the NY area, or know of where there are some, let me know =) We'll bring the champagne!!

I'm opening up a Thai/Burner chill space/restuarant in Thailand called "The Magic Garden" and I need two 6 person hot tubs for the place. Buying new and having them shipped over is quite expensive. I'm looking to fly someone out to Koh Chang, Thailand that can completely supervise and build two (or one large 12 person one) hot tubs. Write me at yesmarcus@gmail.com

Can you catch anything from a hot tub?

Is it possible to catch anything from being in a hot tub?

I was in a hot tub of guys and girls over the holiday,
and someone joked as to whether the girls might get
pregnant from whatever might be in the water. Eww.
And what about diseases?

I've hot-tubbed naked with many people several times
in the past, and never had any issues. Maybe I'm lucky.
But I'd like to know.

Are the different means of sanitizing equally as effective?
You know, bromine/chlorine versus ozonation, versus
ultraviolet...
Hot tub woes

Ok, I had some trouble with the tub this year, restarting it for fall use, after giving it the summer off. The motor on the pump wouldn't turn! It just hummed, then shut itself off. So, I remove the wiring conneticing it to the house, and unbolt it. I took it first to an electrician at work, to see what he could make of it. We looked at it in the shop after hours. We disconnected the pump and saw that the motor worked fine. OK, so the pump is bad. We also noticed that it was heavily corroded. I disassembled the pump and lubed the shaft, and cranked the impeller around by hand, and eventually got it turning.

I then went to the guy I bought the pump from, and he looked at it. He pointed out the leak which caused the corrosion, and gave a detailed account of what he usually encounters. I asked if there was some way I could repair the pump. He said he couldn't give me parts for it, as he no longer carries that brand, saying that the manufacturer treats him like dirt, and makes it impossible for him to properly serve his customers, so he switched brands.

He then said he could sell me a new pump, but it'd be in parts, and I would have to assemble it, for $200. It would fit my motor, but not the unions for the old pump. These would have to be ground out by hand, by me, as they were bonded PVC.

He said that since my motor shaft was corroded too, it would have to be replaced eventually as well. A whole new motor and pump as a unit from him would cost $500, but again, I would have to grind out the old unions.

He also said if I brought in my whole water plant, he could do the fitting, which with the pump would run $800.

All this unexpected expense and lack of guarantee that it would all work when completed was breaking me up with anxiety (the opposite of what I had in mind when I built the tub in the first place), so I decided to think about it for a while.

I realized that I did have a working pump, even if the leak eventually destroyed it, and it could function for a while, maybe a great while, without doing anything.

So I put it all back together, and got the fall's water started heating up.

But you can see my frustration, from needing a new pump seal, to having to break away my old impeller to clean my motor shaft, to requiring a new pump, to assembling the pump, to needing a new motor, to paying to have all the out of spec stuff fitted. Damn.

I went online, and searched by my exact pump-and-motor type. About $200 new, and I can just plug it in direct. Crap. And I thought I had been dealing with a guy I could trust. You know, a bit of mark-up for him, with all his advice and help, would have been fine. But from $200 to $500? And that needing additional for fitting, with no assurance it will work? Now I feel used.

But hey, the tub's on, now, even if it will break soon. And now I know how to get the replacement parts I need, and am confident I can do the replacement myself. But I feel bad that a guy I really liked was trying to fuck me. And I'm left wondering if he's fucked me in the past, preying on my ignorance. Hmm. I'll still use him, as a source for info, but I'll do it with a grain of salt. But I won't trust him, not with my money, unless I have no other choice.

hi! i'm new here in the world of owning a hot tub.... just moved into a house with one... and know nothing about it...

is it possible to use environmentally friendly products that aren't harsh on our skin and bodies and the earth?
(that isn't really expensive)

someone suggested soft spa... using a chemical that's been used for years by surgeons to sanitize before surgery? and a form of hydrogen peroxide... doesn't smell harsh, sometimes a "nutty" smell...
does anyone have any guidance?
much appreciation!

..that tubs/spas or whatever the 'industry' likes to call 'em have no unbiased consumer reports-type resource for reviews? do a web search and all that comes up are the b..s. marketing sites masquerading as factual fonts on info. has anyone found anything reasonably trustworthy?

the thermospa brand sounded good, in fact too good. call them up and you get what sounds like a call ctr. and then theu're gung ho to send someone to your house for a 90 min. (!!) 'consultation (read...sales ptich).

with the markup on these things, something tells me there's a class action law suit begging to be filed.

I am thinking of getting a hot tub and would like to run it off propane if possible.

When I have seen peoples electric tubs, the tubs seem to be switched on permanantly so that the water is kept warm.

If I ran a propane system, would it be the same idea?

Also, any ideas on the pros and cons of propane vs electricty.

Thanks.

Hot tubs in the Heat of Summer?

Hey tubbers.

I don't know bout you, but when things heat up in summer, the hot tub ain't the place to be for me. I live in L.A. in the deadly hot and oppressive San Fernando Valley, so I turn the thermostat down to around 98 degrees so that it's just at most, a body-temp dip. Who knows maybe even lower (86?) to feel like a cool tub. Still like the jets and bubbles, just a chill-chill instead of a warm chill.

What's your experience? Thoughts?

I'm starting to look for a tub. Can you tell me what specifics I should look for aside from seating capacity and price? I'm new to this so I have no idea what makes for a good pump, heater and electrical setup. I'm hoping for something in the medium to large range, 6 to 7 seater. Thanks!

Here in Portland OR there's a groovy place called Common Ground where you can sit in the sauna and soak in the two outdoor hot tubs for an hourly fee. It's got a really nice atmosphere and a friendly staff. It's open to both sexes except Monday evenings are men's night and i think Tuesday is women's night. Nudity is the norm there, so not for the shy or modest. There are also massage, chiropractic and other wholistic services available at the site.

Has anybody done any research on where the deals are at? I'd like to find a good deal on a simple, round hot tub (for some reason the rectangular ones with all of the contoured seating don't appeal to me). I'd love a redwood tub, but think they are probably more expenseive. Any advice?

I go in the back yard to the tub, doff all the cold-weather garb, and climb into steaming 105 warmth... I sunbathe in the direct rays froma crisp cold bule sky. After my skin is red from too much heat, and I'm too pruney to go on, I climp out into my sandals, my skin steaming in the frigid air, I don't even notice the actual temp, and go inside to dress.

Pad Construction Guy?

Does anyone have a recommendation for someone who can construct a good safe hot tub pad out of pea gravel and pavers? I want to have the pad made out of pea gravel & pavers rather than poured concrete because we might need to move the hot tub's location sometime this next year.

build yr own hot tub?

this summer, i'm taking it on. i'd like to build my own tub. i have a lot of ideas, but i'd like any suggestions you have! i would consider getting one on craigslist, but i don't think it could be craned into back yard, and my doors are very narrow.

have considered:

concrete/plaster/ haybale frame
prefab kiddie pool
cinder blocks

as for heating, possibly fire-heated, possibly rigging an old coffee maker (saw a website describing this).

but damn, i'd love to have jets.... what about getting a water fountain pump and rigging that to it?

who made the tub featured on the page? (at bm)

send all your thoughts along!

thanks, kimberley

my fantasy of building my own hot tub ....

I have a great 1970s book about how to do it and some friends with technical skills to help me figure out the heating mechanism part. The easiest way would be to find an appropriately sized wine vat (hard but not impossible). Since I'm renting my apartment my set-up needs to be movable - i.e. on a wood platform base instead of concrete - and ideally I'd like to have it solar heated - though I like the snorkel stoves too as much of a project as they are to run.

Anyone here built one before or want to entertain the idea of building one (or two or a few) with me this fall?

Up to a week ago... I lived in Alameda, my home complete with redwood deck and Hot Tub.

I now live in San Francisco (Dubose Triangle), my home, although very nice, sadly devoid of a Hot Tub.

I thought I'd be cool about the switch. five bedrooms at my disposal, separate kitchen and living room, good neighborhood, washer & dryer, all the shit I've said I wanted... Still I'm jone’n for the tub!

Are there any commercial "Tub-Yards" near Dubose Park in the City?

* I’m willing to pay, but place must be clean and comfortable.

Are there any Hot Tub collectives in the city?

** I'd be willing to assist with heating bills, upkeep and chemicals (hot tub chemicals you freaks!).

The Headless Point Hot Tub was in effect last night.

I arrived an hour late to the party, which is good because anomaly was dying her pubes and syd and steve 23 were dying their heads, dan and aaron were nowhere in sight and michelle was at cals party down the street. An hour later there were 10 nekked chicks in the hot tub. Standard Headless Point protocol.

That is all.

A few weeks ago some friends of ours down at the castle invited us over to help move in their new 8-person hot tub. All in favor of a new tub in the neighboorhood, we headed down and muscled the beast in place. We were all rewarded with beer, barbeque, and grilled oysters - yum.

A couple of days later, Paul found out that the landlord wasn't interested in having the hot tub installed. So, another party down at the castle with a slightly different crew and we moved the tub back out. It's staying down at the Box Shop until they can find a new home for it.

We have a pretty good lil tub down at Headless, but we figure, the more the merrier. Ours is rated for 5-6 people, which means we fit 10, or 12, if you're real friendly. The new tub is rated for 8-10 people, so we figure we can squeeze 15 people easy.

So the question is, do we buy the new tub and work like slaves to pull the tub up the hill AND remove the old one, and/or keep the smaller older one and slide the new one in next to the old one?

Sorry for leading to the demise of the old East Bay topic. Let's start afresh. So far we've had two nights at my tub.

Free Outdoor 8 seater, square Hot Tub. To CLARIFY, the hot tub was used a couple times in the last couple of years. But this is an older hot tub. NOT a new one. Has cracks along the edge but otherwise in useable condition. We have not tested the tub in over a year but it will be cleaned up for someone to pick up. Comes with all the accessories (i.e. cleaning supplies, chlorine tablets, etc).

It's all yours if you can pick it up without destroying our fence/other property and haul it away!

Hi there!
I am in Seattle, WA and I really need a new hot tub cover and filter element! I am broke because I have to move and can't afford $300+ right now. My old cover fell apart and my filter is 2 years old and falling apart too.

If anyone has a cover or filter element that they don't need anymore, I'd appreciate it.
Thank you! Vamp

PS My hot tub is 8' with one cut corner and the filter is 8" wide by 19" tall with a 4" hole.

I have a bad back so am thinking of getting a spa. the Hot Spring brand floated to the top of my list after a brief search. anyone have one and care to share their thoughts on them? im specifically looking at the Prodigy, or the Tiger River Sumatran (both are near the bottom of their respective lines, but are still pretty pricey.)

Speaking of pricey, are spa resellers like mattress resellers? huge margins? when i bought my mattress i talked the guy down to 50% of the posted price without him even blinking. similarly, when i went in to look at spas, the price they quoted me was $800 off their $6000 tag, without me even attempting to bargain. how low can you go? im wondering if an offer of $5500 for a Prodigy will get me thrown out of the shop.
